It's very helpful: Looking at the lymph node under a microscope can make the diagnosis if it's uncertain.  If there is cancer present, then the pathologist can actually see the cancer cells and ascertain where the cancer is coming from and how aggressive it is.  There are other causes of enlarged lns that can be identified as well - e.g. Fungi, or granulomatous diseases - these can be seen many times by microscopy.

Removal is better : Lymph mode needle biopsies are sometimes difficult to interpret thoroughly. If an excision of the node is possible, that may be a better option. That way the pathologist reviewing your case will be able to asses the complete nodal architecture. The only worry to have at this point is getting the best sample possible to correlate with the pet.

Hashimoto & lymph no: Hashimoto thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease of the thyroid. In of itself it is unlikely to cause lymphadenopathy, enlarged lymph node(s). I would suggest you havee you physician check your neck as well as other common lymph node locations to assess whether further evaluation is appropriate.

: Not usually. Could there be an enlarged submandibular salivary gland instead of a lymph node?  Does your ENT specialist follow you for a persistent enlarged lymph node and has a biopsy been recommended or has the size been stable for years?
