Estrogen/Progesteron: Your Estrogen and progesterone levels drop dramatically the week prior to your period.  This drop affects you in many ways.  For example, it decreases your brain serotonin levels and this can make you blue and depressed.   Best wishes!

Physiology: The menstrual cycle has 2 parts: follicular and luteal. The follicular phase has FSH with stimulates ovarian follicle growth. The follicle secretes estrogen. Estrogen levels trigger lh to cause ovulation. After ovulation (luteal phase), the ovary secrete mostly Progesterone but also estrogen. The endometrium changes to receive the embryo. If pregnant then HCG cause the ovary to continue prog.

Not a clear question: Estrogen and progestrone are the two main hormones associated with the cycle.  But it is the amount of sectretion (surge or up-and-down) that makes a difference.  When  ovaries are active, at the time of egg release there are certain amount of secretion of each above hormones that set the stage.  So when there is no cycle (due to menopause, etc), the levels of few hormones can be affected.

Rise and fall: Simply put, estrogen rises after the period is finished x 14 days and if ovulation occurs then progesterone is added to the recipe for another 14 or so days.  A couple of days before a menstrual period is due, Mother Nature "turns off the oven" and both hormone levels fall resulting in a period.
