Approximately  130: The field of vision on either side is about 130 degress from fixation which means that you can actually see something moving from just behind the plane of your ears.  Pretty terrific.

Exam time: Seeing flashes of light or stars can be associated with eye problems (pvd, retinal tear, etc) or high blood pressure. In pregnancy it can be associated with preeclampsia also. Most doctors want to be called or have a patient seen quickly if such symptoms. A physical and eye exam plus evaluation of blood pressure and tests can help determine what's occurring.

Floaters: It sounds as if you have had a posterior vitreous detachment.  This is a situation where the vitreous(jelly) of the eye detaches (not a retinal detachment), it then "crumples" up leaving dots, spots, strands of blurry vitreous; i.e. The "floater".  You should have an exam to ensure the incident did not tear the retina, which could lead to a retinal detachment.  Wait one year then consider surgery.

That's normal: Unless it is recurrent/persistent and/or accompanied by new/worse floaters and/or part of your peripheral vision that goes missing (like a curtain or veil). If the latter is the case, then see an eye doctor, preferably a retina specialist.

Tiny bit: Men have prominent eyebrows while women have more recessed brows.  So men have a very small portion of the superior field blocked compared to women.  Functionally this is not a meaningful difference but it can be measured.

Vision map: The visual field exam, taken in a dome like apparatus, maps out the sensitivity of the retina at a broad array of points. It produces a sensitivity MAP like an altitude MAP of a mountain range, which can estimate the health of the retina and also changes in the sensation reception of the brain.  Regular fields are done in conditions like glaucoma to estimate progression of loss.

May be serious: Bright dots are potentially a sign of a retinal tear or detachment and immediate evaluation is indicated.  Other possible causes include intraocular inflammation and stimulation of the retina due to normal aging changes of the vitreous gel in the back of the eye.  If you are currently seeing bright dots, call an eye doctor immediately.
