PORES: Pores are not like doors. You cannot open and close them whenever you wish. Pores are the openings of oil glands; they are inherited; you cannot change their size. Oily skin & severe acne may make pores “appear” larger. Squeezing blackheads & pimples can lead to permanently widened pores. Toners & astringents can make them look smaller temporarily. And get rid of your magnifying mirrors!

I : I am still looking for that magic treatment!  there are lots of claims out on the market, but nothing seems to work very well for that purpose.  Most of my patients with large pores use tretinoin cream to keep the skin texture smooth, pores unclogged, and slightly exfoliated which tends to help the pores seem a bit smaller, although I am not sure they really are.

Yes and no: You can use it on your acne scars but it's not going to do anything. Oxy 5 (benzoyl peroxide 5%) is used for treatment of acne (pimples), not acne scars. It also has no effect on the size of pores. The treatment for acne scars and pores is usually laser resurfacing.

Rosacea: There is an adult variant of acne called "rosacea" which presents with large pores, oily skin, and redness of the nose, cheeks, and chin area. If this is what you have, other medications are likely to help, in particular, a topical antibiotic called "metrogel" or other oral antibiotics like Minocin (minocycline) or tetracycline.

Enlarged pores: There are some lasers such as cutera laser genesis  that will shrink enlarged pores somewhat.There a multiple cosmetic products that will improve the appearance of enlarged pores.

Acne: Start with your primary care physician.  Most family physicians treat acne with good response.  For those cases that do not respond they refer.

Laser treatment: Large pores may be nicely treated with a series of laser genesis treatments with the red veins treated by laser during the same visit.  It is simply an adjustment in the laser settings. More than one treatment for the red veins may be necessary and two to three genesis treatments are likely to reduce pore size.

Several things: OTC products contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Both can be helpful in treating acne.
