Tremor: The commonest tremor is the intention tremor that only occurs when you are using your hands to write or drink coffee for example. Unlike Parkinson's disease tremor which is present when the hands are at rest. The intention tremor commonly runs in families. There are medications to treat intention tremors. A neurologist can evaluate and advise you best.

Need diagnosis: Your shaky hands could be due to essential tremor, thyroid overactivity, medication reaction, Parkinson's, and several other causes.  So, your doctor needs to determine why this is present, but once diagnosed treatments are effective.

Tremors: It is not uncommon to have familial tremors, which bother when the hands are held upright.  This can also occur secondary to medicines and hyperthyroidism.  (parkinson's tremors usually start on one side, and are present at rest, rather than sustention).  Many medicines can help, such as benzodiazepines, xanax, (alprazolam) primidone, even alcohol (not the best approach).  Avoidance of coffee or stimulants?
