Determine cause: Black stools could be due to iron supplements, bismuth antidiarrheal agent (e.g. Pepto bismol), or bleeding from the upper gastrointestinal tract or sometimes right side of the colon. Bleeding can cause black, sticky, smelly bowel movements.  If not taking iron or busmuth, or it continues after stopping, it really is necessary to get seen and be sure there is not a serious but treatable cause..

Black stool: Bleeding from diverticulosis of the descending colon causes red blood in the stool. Black stools are generally caused by bleeding from the upper gi tract such as occurs in inflammation of the stomach(gastritis) or peptic ulceration of the stomach or duodenum. Black stools also occur when taking iron supplement or peptobismol. A stool test can tell if you're still bleeding. See a gastroenterologist

Did he check for...: ...Blood? A simple stool test in the office can determine if your black stools represent melena (blood denatured by stomach acid) or just dark colored stools. In the meantime, particularly since bleeding can be intermittent, watch for signs of lightheadedness, weakness ; stop taking nsaid's, alcohol, tobacco. I anticipate further testing was advised, no?

Nothing or something: Many things turn stool black - like iron pills or bismuth (pepto bismal). So, unless it is a continuing problem, don't worry.
However, blood from the upper intestine - stomach ulcer, polyp, inflammation does cause the stool to be black.
If it is a continuing problem, see a doctor. Tests like an upper GI series or an upper endoscopy can easily detect a problem.

Simple to serious: Quality of the your stool and  your diet is important.  If your stool is firm and formed it is possible that this may be related to iron which could be in  spinach or supplements. Also pepto-bismol or beets may do this.  If  your stool is soft and "tarry" this more likely would be blood.  Also blood makes stools  more frequent.  Stools need to be checked for blood by your doctor asap.
