in less than 24 hrs of unprotected sex i notice 3 boils or hives in my public area.one went away, one dried up, one had white pus. what is it?

Boil: Boils are referred to as abscesses, in the medical community.  They can occur from breaks in the skin, which provide a route of infection for bacteria to form an abscess (collection of pus/infection).  When this happens, you may need to see a medical provider who may need to prescribe you antibiotics or incise and drain the abscess.  Some home remedies may include a warm compress and ibuprofen.

a deep scrape on my leg healed with a yellowy-white pus forming a thick scab with blood. but why are there painfully itchy hives surrounding the scab?

Possible infection: Pus around a wound suggests infection. Best to see a doctor for examination.

Yes: Repeating Zyrtec few hrs after Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is generally safe. Most commonly some drowsiness can be expected, which should resolve in a few hours.

Do not know: Recurrent urticaria warrants medical evaluation. I would start with your family doctor. However may need to be seen by an allergist.

Any food: Technically speaking, any food can cause hives...However, the most common dietary triggers for an allergic reaction would be milk, soy, wheat, egg, peanuts, tree nuts and seafood.

is rubbing alchohol good for hives?

Accepted Answer

NO: It will irritate and dry out your skin, and it will not stop the release of histamine by the cells that causes the hives. You need an oral antihistamine to settle down the reaction. Even topical Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is not likely to be helpful.

what is the quickest way to treat hives?

Accepted Answer

Benadryl (diphenhydramine): Benadryl (diphenhydramine).  Take 50 mg (two tabs) every 6 hours. Also, take tagamet or another h2 blocker (yes, for the stomach) like Zantac or pepcid.  Claritin or another antihistamine will also work in conjunction with benadryl (diphenhydramine).  The best addition is prednisone, but this requires a prescription. Your hives should clear in 5 days or so.  If they last longer, check in with your doctor.

Don't panic: Hives are pretty common affecting 25% of the population.  They are itchy and can be prominent but are not life threatening.  Triggers of acute hives includes food allergy, medication allergy, insect sting or bite and sometimes infections.   Typically an antihistamine such as claritin, (loratadine) zyrtec or Allegra can bring relief. To help identify the trigger, see an allergist, so it won't happen again.
