i had sex 8 months ago and took a std test today. the results of the test for hiv antibodies reflected negative yet, an rna test reflected positive. i have zero symptoms and will be retesting tomorrow. what are the odds of me having it/false positive?

Probably false pos: These are unusual test results. Almost certainly one of them is false, probably the RNA test, especially if your exposure was low risk (e.g. heterosexual), and probably you don't have HIV. Do not simply go through a laboratory or otherwise arrange for your your own re-testing. See a doctor about this, preferably an STD/HIV or infectious diseases specialist. Good luck.

RNA PCR Rare false+: Both Qualitative and Quantitative HIV PCR testing have very low rates of false positivity!
So if HIV 1  Real time PCR quantitation is Positive for 30  or more copies /ml of blood It  means you have active HIV Virus in your bloodstream even if it is at low titer! HIV Non Progressors have Positive ELISA/Western Blot Testing but negative HIV Viral load ! So HIV does not replicate in their bloodstream

Too soon to rule: out HIV. The PCR RNA test if negative at about 3 months after exposure would rule out infection. A negative result before than may not be definitive. A positive result be definitive any time.

PCR: The gold standard is the PCR for viral load. False-positive ELISA screening tests are always confirmed with a test using a different chemical principle. If you now have the diagnosis of HIV, you'll get some more tests that will further confirm what's happening. Be brave and realize that HIV is manageable.

If positive it is followed by a western blot test which is highly specific.  False negative results can be due to numerous different causes but should not generally be a source of worry if other stds are also being tested for.
