Lunges!: Lunges carrying the dumbbell with either or both hands is very effective. Better with two though!

my husband complains of pain at the junction of his thigh and butt. he says he has trouble sitting. he thinks it's his hip. could he be right? if not, what else might it be? i was thinking tendon or muscle issues?

Possibilities: Could be from hip, but also might be lumbosacral spine, sacroiliac joints, piriformis muscles.  In other words, these things are challenging to sort out.  Perhaps seeing a physiatrist, getting exam and imaging can reveal pain generator

in 2012 had a hip revision.now in pt,top of my thigh going sideways i have a muscle that is deformed.looks awful pt has no ideas is this common?

I am so sorry: Your revision has not worked well.  Not necessarily a surgical error but reviisons are not perfect.
The physical therapist should seek a second opinion

can the l4/5 affect the front of the thigh? my muscle by the hip area hurts upon getting up.

L3-4or 4-5: Usually L3-4 supplies the quad muscle.  That pain distribution is ofter sacroiliac referred pain.  Put your heel on the opposite kneecap and let your leg drop to a figure 4.  If the pain is in you groin its a hip problem or in your back its a SI joint problem.  If it is neither, it may be neuritic from L3-4 or a muscle or bone pain.  Next test would be imaging.

2 yrs ago i tore the muscle in my left thigh. i keep injuring it. will i need surgery? having horrible pain from hip down.

Torn Muscle: Not sure if surgery is necessary as many muscle tears cannot be repaired with surgery. Addressing the tear immediately to reduce bleeding and swelling, establish return of normal range of motion, strengthening to the point of being able to accept an eccentric load (negative) and return to sports or activity specific activity must be accomplished to return.  Just resting and waiting will not help!

Muscle Tear: May represent a muscle tear or a hip apophyseal injury.  If the sartorious muscle is involved at the anterior superior iliac spine it can also effect the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve and give you lateral thigh numbness.

Possibly bursitis: Likely bursitis.  Four primary bursa at that location are gluteus medius and minimus and subgluteus medius and minimus.

how can i make my hips bigger? i was told a lot of horseback riding helps build muscle on the thighs & adjust your hip bones

Accepted Answer

Hips: Horseback riding may help improve muscle tone but will not make your hips wider.  Exercises targeted to muscles in the area which you want bigger may be useful.  Consider discussing this issue with a personal trainer.
