at what level can a low crit be life threatening? i know there are other factors but i'm curious about crit. how much pints can you lose before death?

Accepted Answer

Depends: It all depends. The threshold to transfuse varies depending on the situation. If you lose a lot of blood fast like in a car accident, then you may need to be transfused sooner,  but if you lost blood slowly over years, your body may have adjusted and you may not need a transfusion. There are other factors as well.

If you are concerned: about accuracy of diagnosis by your neurologist -  you could ask him/her about concerns regarding possible diagnostic inconsistencies or could request a second opinion.

Alternate causes: should be considered. Your anemia is mild, among other possible causes chronic medical conditions, liver and or kidney disease for example, infectious diseases as well as malabsorbtive states should be considered. Would recommend repeat iron studies in trying to understand if you are still iron deficient.

A mild anemia: Is common in chronic illness. If you have had deterioration this may all fit.

Take Vit D : Your beta thalassemia is harmless. You should discuss your vitamin d level with your doctor and explore the option of taking vitamin d supplement. While waiting for the meeting with your doctor you can safely take 2000 units of vitamin d3 per day. It is available over the counter.

Need Hematologist: Women often see hair loss when their iron stores are low (as yours are). Dizziness on standing is often related to dehydration (volume depletion). But I am concerned about your low white count, red count, and hematocrit. You may need to be evaluated to see if you are losing blood somehow - or if you are not producing enough red cells (and white cells). I think a hematology opinion is in order.

See hematologist.: A disease cannot be diagnosed by a blood test and thus you need to discuss the findings with a hematologist or immunologist depending on what kind of disease condition you have especially if this has been a persistently abnormal finding.

Abnormal labs: The potassium is elevated. I would follow back with your doctor. This could be a falsely elevated level due to cell hemolysis. If this is truly elevated, you would need evaluation and treatment.

Still no definitve : Diagnosis, and we can't draw conclusions too from the limited info on that limited platform. Just keep the follow up and see what the doctors will tell you, although it points towards a hematological disorder, so ultimately a hematologist had to be on board, goodluck

Not an issue: The rdw, mch and mchc are only helpful in evaluating patients with anemia.  ron would be unexpected to alter these numbers.
