HSV 1 infection: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, you have had HSV 1 infection. Since IgM assay did not differentiate between 1 &amp; 2 it is not feasible to say if you have recent HSV 1 infection or recent infection with both HSV 1 and 2.

: The test shows you have had past infection by the germs known to cause cold sores and or genital herpes. Both are inconvenient but treatable issues if they recur, as they do in some people. If you don't get recurrent outbreaks, I see no problem. If you do there are treatments to reduce/avoid problems with them.

Thus condoms do not protect against the skin to skin transmission of the herpes virus. But, to have igg antibodies you have to have been exposed months before at least.

: IgG antibodies indicate long term exposure to either HSVI or HSV II.  IgM antibodies are due to a recent outbreak of HSV I or HSV II exposure acquired sexually.

: Once an HSV blood test is positive, it remains positive for life; and that person has the HSV infection for life, in your case HSV type 1. Changing numbers with repeat tests is normal and doesn’t mean anything. You’re just like half of all adults in the US. If you’re having no obvious outbreaks of either oral or genital herpes, probably you never will. Don’t lose any sleep over this. Good luck.

: People who are positive for hsv1 may cross react and have a false positive for hsv2. Since you've never had sexual exposure to anyone, your result may be a false positive. Perhaps you could repeat the test in the future at a different laboratory.

IgG = past infection: IgG antibodies typically develop later on, and usually indicate a past infection (ie, you didn't recently get infected).  So when someone has IgG antibodies, they've had the infection at some point, and with herpes, the virus remains and can get activated which is why sores come.  Titers that are independently high for both mean both infections in the past at some point.

Herpes simplex: Once you are infected with this virus you remain with it for the rest of your life. It recurs clinically with wide variability and under different circumstances depending upon the individual involved. The antibody test you underwent simply confirms that you have the virus, and have been infected with it sometime previously. From your values you have probably only had Type 1. Hope this helps
