Breast tissue variab: The breast tissue density among women is quite variable and ranges from dense to lucent and any degree of mixed forms(that is what heterogeneous means as opposed to homogeneous). The breast that is very dense can sometimes hide a small breast Cancer . That is why such women are advised to have examination with an ultrasound in addition to mammography. You do not seem to have that problem.

Normal: It sounds like a mammogram report. Detection of masses on a mammogram is easy in women whose breast tissue has been replaced in various proportions by fatty tissue - which happens with age. Denser breasts means there is less fatty tissue and more fibro-glandular tissue, more common in younger women, or older women who take hormones. A mass is easier seen in breasts that are not dense.

When we see "indeterminate mass" in a radiology report, generally that means whatever the radiologist saw was too small or it looks blurred against the surrounding tissue. Normal breast tissue can also mimic the appearance of a mass in women your age and repeat studies are often needed to get a better image for the radiologist to review. Hope this helps

Need sono: Mammo with heterogeneous dense mass needs evaluation as to whether a lesion is hiding in area of density. This can be accomplished by sono or MRI but resolution of density required.  The sono can detect a specific region that could be suspicious and require bx.

Uniform dense breast: In the young female the breast is extremely dense and consists  of mostly breast tissue.  With age, the breast tissue is dispersed with fatty tissue so that over 35yo mammo can be performed and one can visualize breast tissue.  In some patients over 50 the mammo shows only sheets of dense breast tissue with no fat spread interstitially.  Here a small lesion can only be detected by ultrasound.

Normal finding: Dense breasts on mammogram are usually seen in younger women with fuller breasts. I wonder why you would be getting a screening mammogram at age 35? Do you have a family history of breast cancer?
