Common: Herpes simplex virus - 1 (oral herpes) infections are common in the United States. About 68 % of the population are carriers of the virus. This infection is less common on the palate than on the lips. Once it happens, this infection tends to reoccur in the same place. This virus remains lodged and inactive (latent) in the relay houses (ganglion) of the nerve branches acting up two- three times/yr.

Herpes vs canker: A sore inside the mouth usually isn't herpes. Oral herpes (cold sores) almost always are outside the mouth, usually on or near the lips. A sore inside the mouth is rarely herpes; more likely a canker sore, which is a different thing entirely. So maybe you didn't expose your partner at all. If you do have oral herpes, almost certainly it's HSV1; it is unlikely you could give him HSV2.

: Certainly none of this is typical for herpes. That might be a consideration if the mouth sore area has ulcers (open sores). Otherwise, I would look to other causes. Don't try to self diagnose this. See your doctor, the sooner the better -- diagnosis usually is easier and more sooner rather than later after onset of symptoms. Good luck.

Be sure of diagnosis: Get examined please. Canker sores are common aphthous ulcers of mouth that occur situationally, often in response to stressors, are bacterial or viral, can be treated topically with many otc products that reduce local discomfort &amp;potentially speed healing. However, oral/dental problems &amp; a number of systemic diseases cause canker sore-like lesions--Crohn's, Behcet's, STD (sexually transmitted).

Mouth pustule: The fact that your roof of mouth hard bump softened and drained pus argues strongly for a pustule (bacterial infection) rather than an herpetic sore. But then again the fact that you now have the bump back again in the same area makes recurrent herpetic sores a possibility. You should see your internist so that the sore can be visualized and treated.

Canker sore: selve diagnosis is at best risky. If the "canker sore" is still present 14 days after onset, make an immediate appointment to see your Dentist or an Oral Surgeon. Once you have contracted the herpes virus it is always present in your system. Avoid intimacy until you are totally symptom free.

Bumps in mouth: Are the bumps  bothersome and painful   probably nothing to worry about. Did you eat something that was hot ?  You could have burnt you mouth.  If it is persistent check with your doctor and be sure it is nothing. It sounds like nothing to worry about. But just be sure by having someone look.At it.   Feel  better!  good luck.

Short & long answers: The short but not-quite-correct answer: you're contagious only when a sore is present. The longer, more correct answer: you can shed virus from the mouth even if you do not have an active ulcer; but you are most infectious when an ulcer is present. However, you cannot give it to someone who already has it - and 60% of the population already has it. So try not to worry about it too much.

Possible: You can but it would be uncommon. It is not clear but usually oral herpes present as a blister formation. What you are describing sound more like canker sores.The cause of this is not clear but smoking, stress and viral causes have all been proposed. You can talk with your doctor for the best treatment especially if they are very painful 
Other causes have been implicated is hot foods.
