Ingrown hair: You ask a good question and any painful lump or bump on the vagina warrants examination, however this is more likely an infected hair follicle/ingrown hair/folliculitis given that herpes tends to look like a small, clear, fluid filled blister with red patches. hope that helps. Keep the area clean and dry.

It will hurt: It will hurt no matter what you do.  I recommend BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene)--a food preservative anti-oxidant in a dose of 2,000 mg per day (split the dose throughout the day).  Download a free e-book, "Wipe out Herpes with BHT."  Also, apply DMSO topically, available from a health food store or animal supply (or on line).  DMSO will dry up topical lesions rapidly, painlessly.

It would be very: unusual for a woman to have an ingrown hair on her lip line.  A recurring bump on the lip line sounds more like Herpes Type I, the type that usually affects only the area around the mouth.  I don't recommend popping it,  It doesn't make it go away sooner and your fingers could be a source of spread to other parts of your body or to someone else.  Hope this helps?

Anxiety?: From what you describe, it doesn't sound like a herpes infection.  If it were, by the way, popping it would just make it spread more.  When in doubt, it would be better to just leave it alone or seek a professional evaluation and advice	reatment.

Herpes New info!: Heres is contagious where one gets infected. If one is infected ion the  labia or other parts of the perineum than a condom on the male partner will not protect him from her viral shedding. There is not test to tell us where one is contagious unless we know where your sores are at with a break out. 

All sexually active couples should now know their herpes status.  Medication may lower the risk.
