Yes: Yes it is possible to have both. Typically however, only large hiatal hernias cause symptoms such as chest pain, difficulty eating, shortness if breath, reflux, and anemia. An upper GI contrast study can help with that diagnosis.

i have a small umbilical hernia & i have to get my gallbladder taken out. is it safe to have the symptoms with the hernia?  & can they see my ovaries too?

Yes: It is very common to have a small umbilical hernia repaired at the same time you have a laparoscopic gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy). It is not a routine practice to examine ovaries during gallbladder surgery, however, it is technically possible. Have this discussion with your surgeon. He/she may want to have a gynecologist available.

Umbilical Hernia: The common symptoms of ruptured umbilical hernia repair are abdominal pain, bleeding , swelling around that area or bleeding. If you suspect, please call or see your surgeon.

i'm 32 yrs old. had my tubes tied 5 months ago. i have a umbilical hernia. don't see doc for 3 wks. what makes it worse? and is back pain a symptom.

Umbilical/incisional: Are you saying the umbilical hernia is from the umbilical incision for the tubal ligation?  You should definitely see your doctor who did the surgery and follow up on that.  You may need surgery to fix the hernia.  Ignoring it makes the situation worse.  Weight gain makes it worse.  If the original surgeon is slow to response, condsider getting a second opinion from another surgeon!

Maybe: If the hernia is firm and painful, itchy be the cause. If this is so, you need to see a doctor asap. If this is not the case, the two are probably unrelated. Your primary care provider should be able to tell one way or another.
