Hernia: If you're having up abdominal pain and were told by a physician that you have a hernia and i recommend you seek an appointment with a surgeon as soon as possible.  A hernia is a hole in the muscle through which a piece of intestine can protrude in certain instances get caught. 15 testing it gets twisted or compressed it can become strangulated and die. This then becomes a surgical emergency. It doesn't happen often but if you're the one that happens too it's a severe problem.

Possibly: This  would be an unusual practice but it is possible. The main problem would be scheduling to different physicians schedules. As well, this would likely add cost, as the cost of operating room time is significantly more than the cost of outpatient GI procedure room time.

Hernias development : Colonoscopy injects a lot of air into the colon and increases intravenous-abdominal pressure.  If you have a hernia, the increased pressure will cause a pre-existent hernia to protrude.  You should see a surgeon to have it repaired. The hernia has probably been there for awhile and protruded after to increase in abdominal pressure.

No: The colonoscopy only can see the inside of your colon. Think of it as being able to look inside of a hose. It is not able to look inside your abdomen. Think of a hose that is in a container. By looking inside the hose, you do not see what the outside of the hose looks like as it sits inside the container.

No: If you are talking about a groin hernia, the answer is no.

Yes: The presence of an umbilical hernia does not preclude you from undergoing a colonoscopy. As always, just be sure that there is a proper indication for you to have the colonoscopy.

Possibly: During a colonoscopy the patient's abdomen is routinely pressed on to help advance the scope through the colon. This pressure could be uncomfortable. Sometimes part of the colon can be in a hernia and require it to be pushed back in to complete the procedure.

Not the best test: An umbilical hernia usually only contains a small loop of small intestine.  Unless it is massive, there will be no problem completing your colonoscopy.  This is not a test to diagnose an umbilical hernia, though.
