how can cancer occur at a cellular level?

Genetic changes: Our normal cells replicate themselves over and over again. As we age or are exposed to certain toxins there can be "misprints" or genetic mistakes in the replicatin process. When this occurs, usually our bodies detect this and destroy these cells, however, if that doesn't happen and these cells keep reproducing in a faulty manner then tumors form.

can you tell me what occurs (at a cellular level) with ovarian cancer?

Accepted Answer

Growing cells.: Cancer starts when a cell gets damaged and keeps growing. Normal cells grow and divide at different times in life, but then stop. Cancer cells never stop. They don't have an "off"switch. Ovarian cancer is simply an ovarian cell that started dividing and kept going. Over time, the cancer cells gain the ability to invade and move to different places. DNA damage: Cancer cells divide and multiply faster than normal cells. Ionizing radiation damages the dna.  This leads to cell death. Chemotherapy may act as a radiosensitizer and makes the cells more susceptible to the radiation.  Chemotherapy in addition acts specifically on the dividing tumor cells. The most common way is by damaging the dna or blocking the repair and thus leading to cell death.

HPV test?: Unfortunately, anyone who has had genital contact is at risk for cervical cancer because the human papilloma virus is so widespread. Usually when we find atypical cells on a pap smear, we reflexively test for hpv. If it is positive, then you do have a small risk for dysplasia or precancer, but if it is negative, you have almost no risk. If your hpv test is (+), you will need follow up.

Doesn't work that wa: CRP is non-specific. It goes up with any form of inflammation. There is no level that is specific for either cancer or heart disease. It just doesn't work that way. If you find that dissatisfying, reflect on this: it's not a very good test.

Yes and no: Cure for cancer depends on the type of cancer, how early it was found, whether or not it has spread to other parts of the body, how early treatment is started, the type of treatments available, how aggressive the tumor is, the skill of the treating physician (oncologist, surgeon, etc.), and the overall health of the patient being treated. Discuss these with your doctor.

Depends: While we are aware of some well established causes of cancer, like cigarettes, there is much that remains a mystery.

From Cell Damage: Most cancers start due to acquired damage to normal body cells leading to mutations which lead to abnormal cell growth, increased cell lifespan, and a tendency to spread.
