Numbers and type: Viral load refers to how many viral molecules can be detected in the blood. It gives an idea about how active the virus is and can be used to monitor response to therapy. Genotype refers to a test that can identify subtypes of hep c. Certain genotypes are more likely to respond to a given therapy, so this information can be useful in deciding in what treatment, if any, would be best.

No alcohol: Avoid any alcohol and avoid getting coinfected with hiv. The immune system works to control the virus so avoiding stress, eating healthy and no tobacco or any drugs may also help. Low viral loads should help lead to higher cure rates with antiviral treatment when she is ready. Low viral load does not predict slower rate of scarring (fibrosis).

Hep C testing: If your first test for Hep C was positive, then you had 2 negative tests- it's quite likely the first test was a 'false positive'. If you were infected, the antibody should be positive. PCR testing can be 'false positive' if there is a small amount of contamination when the lab test is run. If you have...: ...detectable hepatitis C virus, regardless if the viral load is 100 IU/ml or 25 million IU/ml, you have active infection and are infectious. Please, PLEASE respect others and take appropriate precautions to avoid transmission. Also, get treated--there are amazingly good, all oral, options available today with phenomenal cure rates after only a few weeks of therapy.

No: It is great that you are viral titers are undetectable at this point but it is too early to say it is a cure. Finished entire course of treatment as this gives you the greatest likelihood of success. I know that it is uncomfortable, nauseating and feels like the flu, but you already made it through part of the treatment and it only made sense to finish and guarantee a greater chance of cure.

No: A hepatitis c viral load level does not indicate how much liver scarring someone has. And, with new treatment for hepatitis C, cure rates are the same no matter how high the viral load is. The important thing is to find a health provider who can help you on the path to cure.

Not sure: I'm not sure.  In people with hepatitis c we check hcv RNA (hepatitis c viral load).  There's also a hepatitis b viral load (hbv dna)' but that has nothing to do with hepatitis c. Make sure you don't have both infections.

Mild asymptomatic : If there is no viral load then there has been exposure to hep c in the past, but it has not produced active inflammation of the liver with multiplication, and will probably not require therapy or create major problems.

Hepatitis C: If you have an undetectable viral load for that many years, continued surveillance monitoring is a reasonable strategy.  The treatment for hepatitis c is not easy and doesn't need to be attempted for somebody who has no consequences of liver fibrosis or evidence of a viral load.  The treatment is also very expensive, difficult to take, with has a success rate that is not very impressive.
