No: The HIV and hep c viruses are spread by blood to blood contact such as an IV drug abuser sharing a needle with another and by unprotected sexual contact. They cannot be spread by using a dirty bar of soap to wash your hands.

New Hep C drugs: There are 2 new (just over 1 year on the market) drugs known as protease inhibitors. Victrelis (boceprevir) is one and Incivek is the other. These are only approved for treatment of genotype 1 and either must still be used in conjunction with pegalated interferon and ribavirin. There is a 2nd gen protease inhibitor and a polymerase inhibitor currently in development.

Subtype of hep C: Genotype 1a is one of many subtypes of hep c virus.  It is a little bit more resistant to therapy but new meds that have been approved have resulted in excellent viral response.  The newer agents in the family of protease inhibitors along with traditional usage of peginterferon and ribivarin have resulted in some very good outcomes for patients with this subtype.  Discuss this with your GI doc.

Yes: Newly developed treatments are allowing hepatitis c infections to be cured in an increasing percentage of cases with combination therapy.  The need for and type of treatment can be determined by a hepatologist ( a gastroenterologist  who specializes in liver disease).

Avoid alcohol: The most important change you can make is to eliminate alcohol from your life. Think of alcohol as adding fuel to the fire of hcv. Next, be careful about common medications like tylenol, (acetaminophen) that can increase liver damage if taken at high doses. Check with a doctor before taking any new meds, including herbal products. Other than that, eat a well balanced diet with fruits and veggies and get exercise.

Possible: With new drugs approved by FDA recently such as sofosbuvir/ledipasvir combination (Harvoni) in 2014, cure for certain type (type 1) of Hep C infection becomes increasingly possible.
