i had a c section a week ago, recovering very well, but have terrible hemorrhoids it's been 3 days and it's not getting better at all. i can't even walk properly. do i go see a doctor?

Hemorrhoid ?'s: Hemorrhoids are a frequent problem in pregnancy, and unfortunately the surgical removal is at least as painful as allowing them to recede (clots in hemorrhoids will liquify).  Ask your OB physician for topical lidocaine or try "Preparation H" for some relief.

Possible hemorrhoid: An exam will be needed to determine if the bulge I'd a hemorrhoid, so best to see your health care provider.

Probably: Avoidance of straining at your bowel movements, avoiding hard stools and constipation, occasional sitz baths with epson salts and perhaps occasional stool softeners can help avoid hemorrhoidal pain and swelling.  Some hemorrhoids do require surgery, however.  See your doctor for examination if persistent troubles.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Low fiber and inadequate fluid intake as well as excessive caffeine and alcohol intake can contribute to constipation and hemorrhoidal symptoms. Chronic diarrhea can also aggravate the hemorrhoidal tissue. Try to avoid foods and habits that contribute to either.

What have you done?: Answer depends on what you've done already, and whether you truly have "hemorrhoids."  human have one word for pain at our butts:  "hemorrhoids."  but there are at least 20 different anorectal diseases that can occur.  See your fp, GI doc, or a surgeon to (a) get the right diagnosis and (b) get the right treatment.  If it is hemorrhoids, treatment is direct at symptoms.  Good luck!

Thrombosis: If extruded for a long time, they can clot. This makes it painful and firm.
Needs evaluation to be sure not something else though.

Maybe: Soaking in a warm bath might be better. The OTC meds like Preparation H are good as well. If no relief, see your doctor.

Surgery: Length of time of healing after surgery depends on the extent of the surgery. Was it excision of a simple external thrombosed hemorrhoid? Was it full general anesthesia for multiple hemorrhoids? Can take days or weeks depending on the surgery. Please ask your surgeon for your specific situation.

Care of hemorrhoids: Medical therapies for hemorrhoids: bowel regimen (fiber, stool softners, water to achieve two soft bowel movements daily), sauves (prep h, desitin, (zinc oxide diaper cream) anti fungals), and hygiene (shower, hair dryer area daily).  If the medical therapy fails to control hemorrhoids, then ask for surgical referral.
