30 yr old female. had renal ultrasound for micro hematuria. left ureter jet wasn't firing. kidney blood test normal. could this be cancer?

Blood in urine: It is not likely that you have a cancer.  I see you are taking anticoagulant meds.  This can predispose to hematuria.  Given the ultrasound finging of what could be slowed urine passage thru one ureter, coupled to microhematuria, I recommend further dialogue with your docs.  An IVP or better, a CT-IVP is a valuable next test.

See answer: Microscopic hematuria: very common in general population affecting ~2-5% overall with higher incidence in older adults. Usually clinically insignificant. Visible blood: more likely to have identifiable and/or significant cause. Many causes: too numerous to list. Testing (blood, imaging, and cystoscopy) done to rule out significant causes: uti, renal disease, stones, bladder and kidney cancer.

Microhematuria : Small amounts of blood in the urine can be from problems with the kidney (not seen on ultrasound), the tubing from the kidney to the bladder, the bladder, fever or excessive exercise.  Sometimes the menstrual flow gets into urine. A normal cystoscopy helps rule out bladder diseases. There are several layers of further testing that can be possible, but to answer your concern more details are needed

Hematuria: While symptomless blood in the urine is never normal, it is somewhat common.  Because blood in the urine is the only sign or symptom of some fairly serious problems, it is recommended that you have an initial workup at least.

been having microscopic blood in urine for a month.  if cystoscopy and ultrasound of kidneys are both normal do i accept its idiopathic or if not what would be the next steps to figure it out?

Hematuria: Microscopic hematuria indicates a renal source. Given the normal renal ultrasound a mass unlikely. Microscopic hematuria can be from benign causes like exercise. Could this be some type of sign of glomerular problem, but if so management would be modifying risk factors like BP, blood sugar and weight. Talk to your doctor or nephrologist for guidance on best follow-up.

Kidney stone: This could possibly still be a kidney stone that has not been picked up by the testing. Also a differential is problems with the uterus or kidney infection. I would recommend you see a urologist or a urogynechologist.

Kidney ultrasound: It shows the shape of the kidneys but not the function. They may look normal but not work well. If normal however it makes stones, blockages (obstruction), and cancers/masses much less likely.

Kidney health: Usually a kidney sonogram will show if there is an obstruction to the kidney flow, will tell if kidney disease is a chronic one and will show cysts, masses and kidney stones if present. Sometimes it may show congenital anomalies of the urinary tract.

Typically: The kidneys are evaluated with regard to size, appearance, and presence/absence of hydronephrosis. Stones are looked for. The artery and vein to each kidney are often shown by color doppler. Lastly, images of the bladder are provided. As with any  imaging procedure, the exam is best guided by information about suspected disease from the ordering clinician.

had a renal ultrasound and realized afterwards that i was not asked to drink water  just hold breath and last one years ago i did. make a difference?

Accepted Answer

Drinking water: generally is nor part of a routine renal US.  Maybe years ago they were also looking at the bladder, and had you drink water beforehand to make sure it was full?
