A couple of thoughts: Pain like you describe is usually seen with enlargement of the spleen. This is typically due to a viral infection, such as mono. Constipation and pockets of gas in your colon can also do this.

?pleuritis: infections--sometimes viral of the covering of the lungs--pleura--can cause pain.viral infections of the junction of bone and cartilage of the ribs can cause pain too--costochondritis

Yes: Severe, blunt force trauma, most often from a motor vehicle collision, can cause a traumatic disruption of the aorta that usually looks like a contained rupture or pseudoaneurysm of the aorta. This can only be diagnosed with imaging studies after consultation with a doctor.

Costochondritis: In most cases, we cannot track the initiating event, but it could be from excessive coughing, lifting heavy weights, strenous exercise, bad posture during sleep, skeletal deformity such as scoliosis. Infection is also a possibility.

is there a collision speed beyond which seatbelts are helpful (ie causes chest trauma). just curious - obviously going to use one!?

Beyond a Belt: Since seatbelts are themselves not the cause of chest trauma resulting in serious injury, but rather the deceleration of the collision, it is the speed that is the factor.  Seatbelts will always serve the purpose they were intended to do, i.e. Keep an individual from being thrown from the vehicle.  Superficial trauma comes from the seatbelt, but internal trauma comes from shear forces on organs.

i have a bruise in the middle of my collarbone and there is a bump. i haven't had any recent trauma to the area. what could have caused it?

Some sort of minor -: Trauma must have occured, like bumping into something, without realizing it when happened. Any history of drinking?
Any meds you are on, like aspirin, which in some people can cause bruising? 
If there is a fx, then it might have been due to a weakened bone from a cyst, that broke, from day to day activities, resulting in a bruise, bump. I am sure that would be rather painful.
See an orthopod.

is it possible to determine a bruise that has been caused by trauma and a bruise that has been caused by scratching eczema or do both look the same?

Bruising : A bruise is a bruise is a bruise. A linear bruise is more likely to be from a scratch. A bruise in the pattern and shape of your soccer ball is more likely to be from the game you played last night.

can a significant blunt force trauma to the chest cause a hiatal hernia?

Accepted Answer

Rare: Diaphragm injury allowing hiatal hernia would be rare in chest injury and only slightly more common in abdominal trauma. For required is significant and would usually involve other injuries at the time. CT  scan would help localize injury if present but proving relationship to trauma after the fact may be difficult due to rarity.

Plan: It almost impossible to tell the real cause not seeing this spot on your head. But.. If it's getting better, it's good. You can continue to observe yourself, and if this symptom subside, most likely no needs to worry. If not, you have to go to a doctor.

can afib be caused by trauma. got hit in the chest not to hard, about a month ago. seems as if my ability to exercise has reduced. i get tired faster.

AFib: AFib can be caused by trauma but so can other things. If you are noticing a real change in status you should see your doctor and be evaluated.
