Can't hear right: Hearing problems in kids can have 2 main categories of causes.  There can be a problem with the ears and difficulty hearing,  or there can be brain problems where you can't process or understand what you hear. Either can be considered hearing problems and both need thorough evaluation to figure out what's going on...

: This is one of many over the counter meds where we have no established guidelines for use. We are unlikely to see a funded study in the near future so most suggest you use as little as you can get by with. The 1,3 &amp; 5mg  forms are commonly available &amp; as high as I would go based on the size/age of the kid.

Usually they have : Yes. Most deaf parents have hearing children but there are records of hereditary deafness. These are multigenerational deaf families that marry other deaf mates. Deafness in this kind of situation may occur.

See an  ENT: Having to have the tv loud or having things repeated a lot amy indicate mild hearing loss. Having to speak to the child looking at them so the child can see your lis (may be more than mild hearing loss at that point). Many small children have "selective hearing" which is not a hearing loss at all. . If you are really concerned, see and ENT doc and have the hearing tested. It is an easy thing to do.

Yes: Aminoglycosides is a known class of antibiotics that can cause sensorineural hearing loss that is often permanent.  Some of the antibiotics in this class can also cause vertigo (vestibulotoxic).  Risks increase with increasing dosages or duration of therapy.

Reassure: What we do, of course, depends upon the age of the child. But certain principles are constant. Be truthful.Reaffirm that you are doing everything in your power to provide a safe environment.Emphasize that the circumstances are very unusual and rarely happen. Help them think of the positive things in life. These strategies help.

Pertussis: No, this is not common, but no vaccine is 100% effective. In general, dtap vaccines are 80-90% effective. Among kids who get all 5 doses of dtap on schedule, effectiveness is very high within the year following the 5th dose – at least 9 out of 10 kids are fully protected from diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough).

Genetic hearing loss: Yes, a genetic mutation in mitochondrial RNA has been shown to predispose individuals to hearing and balance problems when they receive amino glycoside antibiotics.  This can happen even at low doses typically acknowledged to minimize the risk of toxicity.  At high doses, however, amino glycosides can exhibit toxicity in the ear even in individuals without this mutation.

i am 32 weeks pregnant and have been working with 4 year olds my entire pregnancy. could being around loud children everyday cause hearing damage?

Probably not: The baby is unlikely to develope hearing damage. Loud kids can be a problem for your hearing.  Open areas and sound absorbing materials in your place of work might be a good idea.

ndrit is almost 5y and can say only 100 words. he uses both hands same. not diagnosed with autism. mentally and physically is ok without hearing problems. plays with children and is very friendly. why isnt he talking yet?

Hard to say: This is something that a developmental pediatrician and/or a speech and language specialist should evaluate. In the US this is routinely done as part of the "Chile Find" program operated by public schools for kids as young as 3.
