why do healing wounds itch?

Histamine release: Whenever tissue is subject to trauma, the body initiates an inflammatory response as part of the healing process. Several different types of cells are released into the bloodstream and make their way to the wound where healing is initiated. Among these are mast cells which release histamine. It is the histamine which causes the wound to itch.

i accidentally peeled my thumb with peeler and it's been 5 days there was a small peice of skin that wasnt all the way off so i put it back over the wound and the wound has turned purple and itches alot it's also slightly red, is this normal healing?

i had a epidermoid cyst removed via minimal excision plus cellulitis. the area is healing but there is dry peeling skin on wound and around it where bandage was. can i put moisturizer on it or should leave it alone? it itches a little?

Timing: Itching is a sign of healing. Would not put anything on skin till wound is at least 5-7 days old other than gentle cleaning to remove dry skin. Once that time has passed can use skin lotion or Vitamin E but still not directly on wound. Vitamin C 500mg a day, Vitamin D 2000 units per day and Zinc 30mg a day all help wound healing.

Probably not: The books say that some people become allergic to the microbes that cause acne. It's time to get serious rx. If topical benzoyl perxoide has not cleared you in two weeks, or you have it on your trunk, get with your personal physician. You owe it to yourself.

Some do some don't: If your fingernails or the skin surface is contaminated with aggressive germs, scratching a bug bite can provide an entry point for infection. Some bites like fire ants, actually inject harsh acid into the wound and is less likely to be infected than others.

i have been using vagasil in my clitoris since i had a tiny cut which is now healing i think. it burns when i wipe. why? my butt also itches.

Wrong Rx,wrong place: Vagisil is not designed to treat clitoral cuts, but when spread over the perineum can irritate with itching in the area due to any bacterial content. This might be a good time to see a GYN MD at the right place for the right Rx for your problem.

Need to examine: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. It would be prudent to see your doctor. However, itching can be a sign of healing skin. If your skin is healing and you do not have fever or weight loss, you may watch and wait.

Allergy?autoimmune?: This sounds as if it could e an autoimmune or allergic disease . It could also be paresthesias from diabetes. You need to be evaluated by your internist or dermatologist.
