Depends: It depends upon the type of surgery you had and whether or not any infection was present. In general it takes about 6 weeks for tissues to heal.

One year: Most muscles take uo to a year to gain fullstrength but theywill never have the 100% strength of uncut muscles, proof is that herneas of the incision canocurr up to 5 years post op.

had gallbladder surgery 3 months ago. had sex first time since and all my abdominal muscles are very sore now, especially under ribs and both sides around belly button. does this sound normal since not using those muscles in quite a while?

: If you had 'open' surgery, where there is a cut or incision, it takes  few months for the muscles to heal. suggest you have sex in a manner where you do not have to strain your abdominal muscles much. Also use a heating pad to the area as needed. You should be fine soon.

Mastectomy surgery: After mastectomy for breast surgery, rectus muscle reconstruction of a breast will have swelling and pain, which will gradually subside over approximately 6-8 weeks.  True "healing" may take longer for all the swelling to resolve.  Check with your surgeon to make sure progress is going as expected.

Abdominal wall pain: Should be healed. Recommend you talk to surgeon who did surgery. He or she should provide best answer and advise course of action.

: Physical exam would be useful.  Potentially an MRI could be helpful.  Rest and time to heal is typical treatment.  Some Physical Therapy.

Ice and elevation: The best ways to reduce swelling are applying ice and elevation, if that is possible. Generally, it just takes time for swelling to reolve - normally 4 to 6 weeks.

what could cause a rash on the abdomen after surgery?

Accepted Answer

Allergic reaction: If the rash is itchy it could be an allergic reaction to surgical prep, to the bandaging tape or antibiotic (if) applied to wound area.
If the rash is painful it could be an infection of some type.
