Best to diagnose: Severe headaches can be due to migraines, but other causes could be present.  Always best to confirm etiology, as treatment success far better in that case.  There are downsides to just taking otc nsaid's such as stomach problems, blood pressure elevation, etc.  If you do have migraine, prevention with riboflavin, co-q10, butterbur, etc could be useful.  Do talk to your doctor about your headaches.

woke up saturday morning and eyeballs hurt when i move them around. when i close them and move them i see flashes of light with pain. also have a headache. ibuprofen helps till it wears off. what's wrong?

Post traumatic HA: Post traumatic headache is the most common symptom following mild head injury. Tylenol (acetaminophen) is the best immediate therapy. If concerned, see your PCP for neurological examination. CT or an MRI scan might be done to rule out a brain bleed.

: It's too soon to have any concern at this time. Just continue with ibuprofen OTC 200 mg x 2 or 3 tablets every 6-8 hours in the next 24 - 48 hours, take with some foods. If pain persists and there are other new symptoms or signs then you can get back to us.

Look at causes: Headaches can occur from a number of things. So if Ibuprofen isn't working, which is the over-the-counter solution, then it's time for you to see your primary care doctor. If your headaches are due to stress, then this has to be looked at closer. If your headaches are due to sinus or are migrainous, then that's another cause.Dietary considerations cannot be over emphasized by eliminating caffeine.

Yes, you can: Tension Type HA is usually treated successfully with OTC analgesic preparations (ibuprofen , aleve). However, the chronic use of analgesics carries with it a risk of developing a chronic daily headache, often referred as medication overuse headache.

TTH: Tension type headaches (also known as stress headaches) are the most common of headaches. Although research suggests that tth is not caused by muscle contraction, it may be associated with pericranial muscle tenderness, increased EMG activity and stress. i sometimes wake up with headaches only ibuprofen will move. i have recently started taking venlafaxine xr. am i safe to take ibuprofen while on this?

Interaction: Alleve and venlafaxine potentiate each other and can cause GI bleeding. This is probably low with a dose of Alleve. Now and then.  However if you are doing this regularly O would get checked by your doctor.

BP: Ibuprofen can cause hypertension and kidney injury.  If you have symptoms recommend you stop this medication and see a doctor soon.
