Possible Fungus: Of the 5 common causes for itchy scalp (Seborrhea (dandruf), Psoriasis (inflammation), Fungus (ring worm), Head Lice, and Allergy), Fungal seems most likely. Try using an Anti-fungal shampoo or scalp cream. The pharmacist should be able to point out one that is safe for your son's age. Follow the directions on the shampoo. If this does not help, you should have his scalp examined. Hope this helps!

Itch: Itching scalp could be due to all the causes you listed, but it also could be due to a fungal infection.  The type of shampoo you use can also cause this so i recommend switching to a hypoallergenic product if you haven't already.  Also stress can sometime result in somatic symptoms such as itchiness, see your doctor soon to find the cause and get relief.

Factors like poor personal hygiene, excessive sweating, strenuous physical activity, overactive sebaceous glands on scalp, exposure to chemicals and environmental pollution, cigarette smoking etc contribute in causing smelly hair.

Itching can be lice: It is sometimes to see lice but they lay eggs at the hairline & they are visable as white pearl like blebs the size of a pin head. Hair grows about 1/2 inch/mo so distance away from the hair base tells you how long they have been there.If only dandruff & no nits you could be dealing with a scalp fungus.

Itching scalp: You need to see a doc to examine your scalp and  find a cause, however, you might try an antihistamine like benadryl (diphenhydramine)  25 mg tree times daily for a week. This will help control the itch no matter what the cause.  Possible causes include allergy to soap or shampoo, sensitivity to hair products, seborrhea or psoriasis , and many more.
