i have hashimotos & i'm on 180mg whole thyroid. my weight can fluctuate 1-2 kgs in 2days. my bloods show normal tsh, low t3 (liothyronine). any ideas?

TBG deficiency: Lots of people have low total T4 and T3 (liothyronine) because of thyroid binding globulin deficiency.  It's not pathological.  More accurate thyroid hormone measurements are achieved by measuring free thyroid hormone levels (ft4, ft3).  The american thyroid association's position statement is that measuring ft3/t3 doesn't demonstrate thyroid hormone sufficiency.  Supplementing with T3 (liothyronine) is not standard of care.

Autoimmune disease: You should see an endocrinologist to accurately diagnose your condition. More than one autoimmune condition could be present, so diagnosis and treatment have to be correct. The combination of thyroid, adrenal, and hematologic disorders is potentially serious and complex.

diagnosed w/hashimoto's 20 years ago, had a tt 2 years ago.  my tsh levels jumping from the very low range to being too high.  what might cause this?

Under active thyroid: Has humorous can start with an over active thyroid but ultimately it damages the thyroid gland.  A high TSH means your Thyroid gland is not producing enough thyroid hormone and your body is "kicking it" to make it work harder.  If the level is very high you will probably need thyroid hormone pills.

my hashimotos may be due to low-selenium diet.doc prescribed me lt4.can i increase se in my diet and also take the lt4? or would that lower tsh 2 much

Accepted Answer

Yes and NO: Yes, you can increase Selenium in your diet if you have been diagnosed with a significant deficiency.  If the deficiency afects thyroid function, an exceedingly rare situation, then replacement therapy will restore no more than normal thyroid function.

TSH of 0.94: At most labs, a TSH of 0.94 is considered normal and is one of many ways to test thyroid function.  Typically a level like this indicates no change in the current thyroid treatment unless the patient is having symptoms of over- or under-treatment.  Palpitations and sweats are some of these symptoms.  The normal levels of TSH are not changed in the presence of other autoimmune diseases.

Any symptoms?: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, just one parameter, in this case TSH, slightly out of whack is not a cause for alarm. You may watch and wait. If your clinical situation changes it may warrant repeating the tests.

Nothing: Untill we know what your replacement dose is. L-t4? Dessicated thyroid? L-t3? Ask him/her.

Yes, transiently: Hashimoto's thyroiditis can go through a phase of thyroid hyperactivity early in the course of disease and that would be associated with low TSH. Sooner or later enough thyroid is destroyed that thyroid functions declines and TSH rises.

slight anemia everything low except rdw is 16.2 & mcv is low nrml 82.4 does the mcv level mean chronic illness?  i have hashimotos but tsh is 3.14

Follow-up: I'd check your serum iron and iron-binding capacity maybe ferritin and do a good full physical. Low RBC / Hct / Hgb, low-normal MCV makes me think of iron deficiency or thalassemia minor. I'd check your old labwork for the latter -- if you've got it, it's good for your family to know. If you're mildly iron-deficient, I'd look hard for the cause.

7 weeks ago my tsh was 0.019 and t3/t4 were normal. this time around my tsh was 14 and my t4 is now low but my tsi is wnl. could this be hashimoto's?

It sounds like: hypothyroidism. It could be Hashimoto's . You probably need thyroid hormone supplement . See your doctor.
