With intensive tx: Harm OCD is often manageable since it is against the basic values of the person and they'll be cooperative in therapy. If it is part of a severe case (which even w/o harm obsessions) is harder to treat, diligent therapy plus carefully balanced medications and even shock treatments may be needed to break the grip. If you can find a tireless therapist you work well with, be patient and hopeful. Best

Possibly: OCD is a separate issue from impulsivity but it is always possible that if the two conditions exist comorbidly that the thought  of harm could be acted upon.  Seek psychological or psychiatric help to manage  conditions before regrettable actions are taken.

:  People with harm OCD may feel like they are losing control over their thoughts and may engage in compulsive behaviors such as checking, seeking reassurance, or avoiding situations that trigger their obsessions.

While hospitalization may be an option for some people with severe OCD symptoms, it is not always necessary

OCD: Start with  cognitive behavioral therapy with a cbt trained therapist with experience in ocd. The therapist will tell you if you also need to be referred to a psychiatrist for medication management. Best wishes.

can a parent do harm when their child has ocd?

Accepted Answer

Not permanent.: It's most important that your child be getting support from a licensed therapist trained in exposure and response prevention.  As long as you a re working in conjunction with that therapist and your child's md (psychotropic meds are often needed to do successful exposures depending on the severity of the ocd), you will not be doing any irreparable harm.  Be sure to get support for yourself, too!

i have ocd with hand washing but think i'm doing harm to my health if don't scrub off all the soap. can obsessive hand washing n soap cause cancer?

Not likely but it: will create skin conditions (making it raw, red, swollen, and prone to infections if broken).   A dermatologist might help your skin but its your brain that is the problem.   OCD is an anxiety disorder with underlying neurological conditions.   Try a psychiatrist for meds and a psychologist for behave mgt.   Here's a reference on anxiety:

i take zyprexa and pristiq (desvenlafaxine) for ocd.  the medications cause weight gain and severe sleepiness.  if i sleep 10.5 hours, could this harm me long term?

Sedation: You don't share your zyprexa (olanzapine) dose, but you do mention "severe sleepiness."  yes, weight gain and inactivity can harm you long-term as obesity and diabetes are more likely to develop -- along with other conditions (cardiovascular disease, etc) that can accompany them.  Please tell your psychiatrist about these side effects -- doses may be adjusted accordingly.
