Could be liver or GB: The area under your right rib margin is home to your liver as well as your Gall Bladder.  It is possible you have a problem there.  I might suggest getting a liver/biliary ultrasound if they did not do that in the ER. Probably would NOT wait for a month however.

Yes: possible gall bladder issue if the pain is under or near the right upper abdomen and can get referred pain into the right shoulder with it

Depends where locate: This could be a rib cartilage nodule. There are probems it could be since the gall bladder is there. It could be a  skin tumor. This  needs  an evaluated. It may be completely benign

Needs attention: This doesn't sound like something that should wait 4-8 weeks for attention. Did you speak to a medical professional at your PCP's office, or an appointment clerk? If the latter, call back and request a call from a nurse or doctor. Discuss with them, hopefully they can get you in sooner.

See a physician: This unfortunately cannot be well answered online.  You really need to see a physician to have the lump physically examined.  Factors such as associated pain, discoloration, rate of growth of the lump, will help your physician decide if the lump is of concern.

the possible causes of a 'painful hard lump' includes everything from an abcess (a boil) to sebaceous cyst to hematoma, and even benign lipomas, which can sometimes become uncomfortable. Fortunately for you, most physicians, including your pcp, will typically be able to quickly tell you what it is, and help treat you - if any treatment is actually necessary.  So go to your pcp asap.

Bone spur: The usual cause of superficial lump is lypoma. Rarely could it be a small bony growth or neuroma.  A lypoma is usually painless, freely mobile, and remains stable over time. Bone spur is hard, fixed and tender on palpation. Neuroma may or may not painful but usually fixed.  Just monitor for changes in size, superficial ulceration, changes in color and any suspicious changes talk to your PCP.

Have them go to a MD: Dear lefty, 

while your intentions may be good, you obviously should not be trying to remove a hard lump from under your friends rib cage for a great number of reasons (including that it may not have to be removed, as in the case of benign lipomas). However, if you truly want to help your friend out, obviously you will have them follow up with a physician for a thorough examination of this area.
