how do you treat hand foot and mouth desease in a toddler? (21 months) i was given vari miconazole oral gel by the pharmacy, is that ok?

Hand foot mouth: Hand foot mouth disease is caused by a virus.  Antifungal gel such as miconazole will not change the course of the illness. It is self limiting and will resolve without special treatment.

is it ok if i put sunscreen on my baby hands and she puts them in her mouth?

Accepted Answer

No: It's not a good idea for infants to ingest sunscreen.  For this very reason, i recommend that sunscreen not be put on the hands of babies.

No: How old is your son? If he is a child, it is likely to be phase he is going though and it is harmless, as long as you keep chemicals out of his reach.

Pleasure: Lips have sensory nerve fibers that send pleasure signals to the brain. Newborns are prewired to suckle without ever having been hungry & the pleasure of touching the lips reinforces suckling even if nothing is there. Older kids & adults may still have enough pleasure from their lips to continue chewing nails, gum, smoking, etc. In short it doesn't mean hunger, it means they found pleasure.

Sometimes: Washing  your hands before eating and after going to the toilet or if you have had them around something very dirty it could be problematic putting your hands near your mouth. Even in this situation most healthy people will not get ill. Every day we put our hands near our mouth without knowing it and do not get ill. If a person is ill and contaminates an item you touch yes  you could get ill.

my child has cornelia de lange syndrome is it normal for this kids to put their hands in their mouth?

Yes: It is normal for any kid to put their fingers or hands in their mouth. There are thousands of pleasure nerve fibers in the lips, and kids find them soothing. Normally functioning kids usually grow out of this habit, while those that are mentally challenged may not adapt the social skills of older regular kids.

Cornelia de Lange: Children with Cornelia de Lange syndrome of often developmentally delayed.  The frequent placement of objects and hands in the mouth is common in developmentally delayed children, but does put them at higher risk for self poisoning, illness and choking.

how likely is it to contract rabies from cleaning up garbage, bare-handed, in the yard that a rabid raccoon may have had in its mouth?

Accepted Answer

Almost zero: As you were not bitten nor scratched by a rabid animal, the risk is almost zero. Also you did not get raccoon saliva into an open wound or on one of your mucous membranes. Simply handling garbage does not put you at great risk.  Of course, garbage can harbor other germs so wear gloves next time.
