do not pick at cuticles
do not bite your nails
wash - 
if have an abrasion or opening on skin, clean with perioxide and use an antibacterial ointment for 1-3 days.

Onychomycosis: Usually this means taking off the entire nail, but as someone famous once said the only guarantees in life are death and taxes.  Good luck.

IT : It is not timew for a home remedy.If someone thinks they have a finger infection there are no "harmless" infections 
someone with intense pain in their finger with redness and swelliing should seek medical attention

other issues can include:
infection, gout, trauma or circulation problems can give severe finger pain.

Infection. Yes a small "hangnail" can get infected but a paronychia, an infection of the space adjacent to the nail can exists. A felon, an abcess in the pulp or the beginings of infectious flexor tenosynovitis can show up this way too.

Gout. Can appear as a reddened hot area that is very painful. Fgouty deposits in the soft tissue of the finger or around the joints can mimick infection.

Trauma. A puncture wound, a fracture, a sprain, a foreign body ( sliver, splinter) can appear this way

circulation issues. Loss of circulation, longstanding issues regarding circulation, cold induced spasm of blood vessels can give a painful finger but less typically a red hot one.

The list can go on

there are enough issues here that can worsen quickly
it is not time for a home remedy  for anyone with these issues.

i have bad itching on the tops of my big toes in the evenings but skin looks fine. i've been taking terbinafine for two weeks for fungal nail infection (in both big toes) and also using loceryl. it's absolutely maddening. is it to do with the medication?

Probably not: The itching probably has more to do with the fungal infection.  I would take 25 - 50 mg of benedryl at night to help the itching.  Cool compresses with Domeboro solution may help as well.  Benedryl cream is another options.

Unknowen: This is a hard one, because we don't know which nail is red inflamed and shiny and which one has a fungus on it. They're probably not related but if they  are the same toe  consider acute athletes foot. Otherwise see your local area podiatrist. I hope you're not taking pills for just one fungal toenail?

Yes: Probably an ingrown nail due to wearing ill fitting shoes.  Needs to be treated with soaks with Epsom salts and wearing properly fitting shoes that do not cause pressure on the toe box if you have diabetes sees doctoras this pilfer serious.

Probable bacterial: This sounds like a bacterial infection(paronychia) for which warm soaks and antibiotics may be helpful, but if it is a paronychia the nail often has to be incised a bit to let the pus come out. See your physician if the inflammation persists.

Likely yes: It can, but there's no garentee.

Accepted Answer

If the shape is norm: Toenail fungus will deform the shape of a toenail if the infection is present for too long.  If you catch it before the nail has changed shape, it will go back to its normal shape after treatment.  If the shape has changed, it will look much better, the color and texture will be restored, but the shape may be permanently changed.
