what can i do if my throat is sore when i swallow. could it just be pharyngitis?

See below: Pharyngitis is, by definition, inflammation of the pharynx.  It is most often a viral illness. But strep can always be a possibility.  Your doctor can check this if needed.

Viral: Viral infections can last anywhere from a few days to 2-3 weeks in many cases.  Your situations sounds viral.  If it does not resolve completely in the next week or so you should touch base with your pcp.

Can be other things.: Strep is not the only cause of pharyngitis.  Herpes simplex, chlamydia, ebv, corynebacterium diptheriae, and many others can also cause it.  That is one reason why the strep check swab is done, as well as a strep culture.  Your doctor should be able to do this/should have done this rapid check so you can start treatment if positive.  See your doctor soon if it gets worse for empiric treatment.

Pharyngitis: GERD can cause throat irritation from acid reflux.  You should have your throat checked out by a doctor to make sure you don't have an infection.

Probably viral: Pharyngitis usually is a viral infection, and viruses do not respond to antibiotics. Your doctor probably prescribed azithromycin in case it's strep, but if not, it's not surprising your symptoms are continuing and even getting worse. Check back with your doctor, but probably you'll just have to wait it out. Aspirin or ibuprofen (or related meds) may help control pain. Good luck!

Dr. can check throat: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep throat). Throat lozenges and Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin can help decrease throat pain.

Strep Throat: Untreated, strep throat can move to your heart and cause damage.  This is an infection that should not be ignored.  There are no home remedies for strep throat.
