Myth: First you have to stop the input - I.e. stop taking them.  Then your body will metabolize them, usually in the liver, and excrete them in the urine or the stool.  The breakdown products might well be active too and each one has a half life in your body. Eventually they will all get out of your body.

Accepted Answer

Often 1 or 2 weeks: Pain to pressure on the tooth is common after root canal and can last up to two weeks.  Severe pain is often caused by the tooth being in hyperocclusion (hitting the opposing tooth too strongly).  The dentist can slightly shorten the tooth and relief will come in a day or two. If  severe pain persists, a persistent infection or fractured root may be the cause.  See the dentist who did the rct.

Tooth pain: Usually a short course of a mild opioid such as tylenol (acetaminophen) with Codeine #2 or #3 for few days.

Accepted Answer

Never leave open: I never recommend leaving a root canal open especially if there is no infection.  Left open you could expect tooth and jaw infection to soon follow.

my blood pressure can sometimes be elevated. i am not on medication. i have read beet root juice may lower. might you be able to advise me how much amount of juice should i drink per day?

Accepted Answer

: Beet juice is NOT the answer for hypertension, which potentially could be handled partially with diet, but far safer to be controlled day in and day out with antihypertensive medication.  You need to contact your doctor and fully discuss options and management.  Remember that hypertension has been termed "the silent killer".

i am on blood pressure (irbesartan 300 mg) medication. during the day values are under control but they rise at night. can i take valerian root? or do i get into some problems?

: You need to be re-evaluated by your doc instead of trying to self- medicate

are herbal remedies safe and effective?  i wanted to try passion flower or valerian root for anxiety. i have never tried herbal remedies but thought they might be worth a try.  i don't want to go on expensive, strong medication for anxiety.

I'm : I'm not knowledgeable about passion flower but have some experience with using valerian for anxiety and insomnia on patients. Basically from an effectivity standpoint, i observe very mixed positive and no significant benefit results which mirrors contradictory information seen in research. Valerian root generally is safe but strongly suggest a discussion on the safety issues with a supervising doctor; for example there are experts who do not recommend its use during pregnancy. Due to its sedation properties, one needs to be cautious when operating dangerous equipment while taking it.

i am a 20/f. went to the dentist & had a root canal. i also had a abscess  was put on purmycin & adco-metrondaz. they made me  nauseous. today was the last day of the medications and i didn't take it as i havea fever of 38.3. is it the medication?

Fever: Antibiotics are supposed to prevent fevers, not cause them. If, however, you are having an allergic reaction to the medication it can cause a fever. But so can viral diseases (common cold, Flu, Covid-19, etc.) that are not treatable with antibiotics that are designed to treat bacterial infections. Call your General Physician and report your symptoms.

i'm on diamox (acetazolamide) 250mg tid, for chiari malformation.  i'm wondering if dandelion root tea will effect my medication?

Chiari malformation: Yes. Dandelion root is a diuretic and so is Diamox (acetazolamide) (actazolamide). Also, dandelion root may slow the breakdown of Diamox (acetazolamide) and lead to undesirable side-effects. Discuss the dandelion root with your neurosurgeon/neurologist.

i have a persistent/daily migraine, displaced from an exposed root canal on one of my teeth. i also have a stomach ulcer and dont know what pain medication to take without upsetting the ulcer. gp advised me, no brufen, no tylenol. what can i take?

Ulcer: From a study from the American Journal of Epidemiology the use of NSAID (Ibupofen) and aspirin were associated with increased risk of recurrent bleeding ulcers in a population of patients, but not acetaminophen.  Given your tooth pain acetaminophen reasonable to take for pain. Given tooth pain topical benzocaine or benadryl can help relieve tooth pain and lessen need for oral agent.
