May not be: If you're referring to the hba1c test, 6.0% may indicate a pre-diabetes condition if you don't already have a history of this or diabetes. If you have diabetes, then 6.0% indicates good blood sugar control overall (provided you aren't having lots of low blood sugars mixed in with high blood sugars).

Many protocols: You take your blood test before, take a set amount of boost or any other high calorie supplement (i prfer just have the patient have a normal meal) and you do a blood sugar 1 hr after.  Some people might still be using glucola 1.75 gm/kg of weight to a max of 75 gm (adult dose).

Glucose: Normal blood glucose levels are roughly 70-140 mg.
If your doctor has you checking your blood sugar you could start by measuring on alternate mornings and evenings.
If either or both of the results are higher than the list above you need to discuss this with your doctor.
At your age diabetes can be beaten.

Depends: A fasting glucose over 125 is consistent with a diagnosis of diabetes.  If the test was done within a few hours of eating it may be normal, or indicate some degree of glucose intolerance.  You should get a hemoglobin a1c to better assess your overall glucose level.

Routine blood test: At the lab, a random blood glucose is done anytime without regard to when the patient last ate or drank. The test is usually done from a blood sample from an arm vein. Doing a fingerstick blood sugar test serves the same purpose but may not give as accurate or as consistent test results. Also, patients may have other blood tests ordered, and an arm vein sample allows some other tests to be run.

See below: General guidelines. For testing blood sugar .Wash hands with soap and warmwater. Dry hands. Prepare the lancing device by inserting a fresh lancet. Prepare the blood glucose meter and test strip use the lancing device to obtain a small drop of blood from your fingertip. The blood drop to the test strip in the blood glucose meter. The results will be displayed on the meter after several seconds.

Normal: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, your results are within the normal limit. The one hour level is at the borderline. See this site for more info.
