Yes: Responsiveness to the vaccine includes the IgM and IgG systems while IgA is more involved with gut germ exposures. There is no reason to think it would not work for you or cause you harm.

why is the mmr vaccine given after 12 months? we're going abroad and they recommend i give it to my 6 months old, but i am scared of the side effects.

If going abroad..: The reason why the cdc recommended it at 6mo if going abroad is because in europe (france especially) there has been a massive outbreak of measles (parents aren't vaccinating their kids).  Your 6mo old is going to be on a plane with international travelers who will be sick, coughing, and spreading germs. It is very contagious.   You do not want your baby to get measles.

But it is !!: Mmr if given in infancy and childhood will generally give a person lifelong immunity. In some cases, it does not and the vaccine can be repeated in adulthood. The original MMR was given once around 12-15 months for about 23 years when they realized a few were not protected by college age. After about 1990 we began giving a booster & that seemed to fix the issue.

The british doc who claimed MMR triggered autism lost his license when his fraudulent research was exposed. Autism is emerging as a gene linked defect.Future research may point to its origin, but it has found no link to vaccines.

For Protection: Just like we need any vaccine to protect ourself against the diseases for which the vaccine is being given.By getting vaccinated your body develops antibodies against the virus/bacteria which gives us immunity and if we are exposed to the virus/bacteria we do not get sick
MMR is given to protect us against Measles/Mumps/Rubella the same way.It saves lives

MMR: 1st is at age 12-15 month. 2nd at age 4years old  (but it could be given before age 4 year.  Specially if concern about kid not conning back for 4 year old visit).
