Elevated serum GGT: Isolated elevation of serum GGT may be related to a number of causes particularly metabolic syndrome which can be caused by obesity, fatty liver, Type II diabetes, hepatobiliary disease, or certain medications. Needs further work up by ordering physician.

May be normal 4u: Around 1 person in 1000 just runs a high ggt; it's hereditary. If everything else is okay including alk phos i'd ignore it unless your physician is concerned. If there's anything else to suggest liver disease, these enzymes keep deadly things like wilson's and hemochromatosis and hepatitis from sneaking up on us -- & with ggt, alcohol and med allergies -- get follow-up.

i got pain in my right side under ribcage, i had blood work done and it came ok ( just ggt bit high its about 2 numbers high then normal, any suggestio?

Gall bladder?: This could be due to gallstones, peptic ulcer disease, irritable bowel, function dyspepsia, pancreatic disease or other.  You should discuss your results with your doctor.  An ultrasound of your liver and gallbladder should be done and perhaps and endoscopy if the above is negative.

alt down 64 from 77. ggt was high but now normal. ultrasound shows a little fat on liver. doc said repeat bloods in 2 months. should i be worried?

Not to worry: Assuming there are no other abnormal labs or symptoms, these are very mild liver abnormalities that can be caused by a host of triggers and the fact that labs returned to normal means that whatever the initial injury was, it was reversible. I agree with you doc. Repeat in 2 months. To make sure that al stays well, don't take high doses of tylenol (acetaminophen) and do not drink alcohol.

m, age 52.  blood work shows high ggt of 170 (range 3-95 u/l). all  other liver enzymes within normal range.  drink rarely. any idea why ggt is high?

Probably you: I'm assuming normal alkaline phosphatase & no other sign of focal cholestasis. If you are otherwise well, you are probably one of the people (it's common, maybe 1 in 1000) who has a gene for high ggt. I need to write letters for folks like you from time to time as GGT is used to monitor folks in sobriety programs. If ok with your physician, i'd not give it another thought.

No such thing: There is no medicine for liver without a diagnosis of the cause of the liver sickness.  An elevated GGT is a symptom not a diagnosis.

I'd ignore it: Unless you have some other reason to be concerned about your health, I'd stop worrying. Some folks have a gene that gives a somewhat or even a markedly elevated GGT.

GGT nonspecific enzy: An elevated GGT level suggests that something is damaging the liver but does not indicate specifically what.  Could be from liver, pancreas even heart as well as other sources.
