Melanocytes: Sun exposure can bring out your freckles by causing melanocytes to produce melanin. Yes, it can be normal.

Accepted Answer

Not dangerous: Pencil lead (graphite) often causes a gray or blue tattoo-like area. The spot would probably have to be cut out to get it to go away. It's not dangerous to leave it untreated.

i just stabbed myself with a pencil (on accident of course, and it started bleeding just a drop. do i need to worry? (the graphite get stuck in the cut or anything, just left a mark?

: Rinse the area thoroughly with soap and warm water. It should  get better by tomorrow. If there is any foreign body, it should be felt. I have very little suspicion about any medical need but if the area remains sore after 48 hrs, please see the hand surgeon. Good luck. Hope it helps.

: When pencils were invented people that graphite was a form of lead and used the term and it has stuck. It has no lead. If you have this habit refrain from it or see a doc/ for it is not normal

Absolutely NOT: Lead from a pencil is nothing but carbon (like charcoal).  This is different from lead, the chemical element lead, that is used in many chemical preparatins such as paint, batteries, soldiering  and the like.  The chemical lead is very dangerous to your health whereas the carbon in the lead pencil is more of a tattooing and inert.  Cerainly the wound from the stab or stick should be treated.

: The lead of a mechanical or other pencil is graphite, an inert substance that is non-toxic. You can scratch the skin surface and not penetrate deep enough to get bleeding, but the wound can still become infected. Keep it clean and monitor it as you would any wound. By itself, the posted description is not worrisome.

That depends: Are you applying enough pressure to break skin?  If yes, how deeply?  I would enourage you to seek mental health care if you have continued desires to harm yourself.

Pencils : Pencils contain graphite, not lead.  (not only is lead too dangerous and heavy to put inside a pencil, lead costs too much.)  so you're not going to get lead poisoning not matter how many times you stab yourself with a pencil.  (btw, you really shouldn't be doing that.)

that being said, i agree with the other doctor who answered this question to make sure the stab wound is treated properly.
