Variable: This varies from person to person.  Some people use a mild vinegar douche to remove residual blood after menses.  It is not necessary though since it will clear on its own.

Bacterial vaginosis: Your GYN may have only checked for potentially harmful infections, but not for bacterial vaginosis (BV).  BV is a common cause of discharge with a bad odor.  BV is not harmful and does not necessarily require treatment, and some doctors do not routinely check for it. BV can be treated with antibiotics.  You can try douche with vinegar and water, but no more often than every 2 weeks.

Several possiblities: There are several vaginal infections that can cause general symptoms. Each has it's own proper treatment. While there is self treat otc medications for yeast infections, the other vaginal infections require different medications. A family physician or gyn should be able to properly identify and treat.
