Meds: Epilepsy does not cause hallucinations, especially between convulsant episodes. It's most likely a reaction to one of the anti-epileptic or other meds you take. Discuss with your doctor to see if any are know to be associate with such symptoms or if two of your drugs are interacting with each other.

Complicated: we are learning more and more each day about inherited epileptic syndromes. Conditions that lower the seizure threshold run in families. There are many different types of seizures and seizure syndromes. I cannot do service to this topic of discussion with the 400 character limit imposed. There are, in fact books written on this topic.

Accepted Answer

No: Epilepsy is either without known cause or related to an identifiable cause.  Unknown cause may present in childhood, be easy to control, and be genetic in type.  Identifiable cause is often partial type seizures and more difficult to control with association with serious medical disease.  Primary generalized is usually unknown cause.  Secondary generalized is usually identifiable with bad outcome.

Brain is complicated: The brain is a very complicated organ. Epilepsy is when a person has repeated seizures over time. There can be many different reasons why someone has seizures. Seizures are due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Therefore an electroencephalogram (EEG) that detects and records electrical brain activity is use to diagnose  seizures/epilepsy.

Meds and diet: There are a handful of medications that work well for generalized seizures.  These are generally started one at a time, but sometimes multiple meds are required to control seizures.  There are also other therapies, including the ketogenic diet, which is a high fat, low carbohydrate and adequate protein diet.  There are other dietary therapies such as the modified atkins diet.

Accepted Answer

Not progressive: Epilepsy is the term we use for recurrent seizures which are not caused by tumor or degenerative brain diseases. Although epilepsy may begin at any age, it usually does not worsen or cause increasing problems over time. However, a prolonged seizure can do permanent harm, so it is important to work closely with a neurologist to keep seizures well-controlled on meds which aren't causing side effects.

Typically...: None. Since there is no area which kicks off the seizure, we can't target something to remove. Even corpus callosotomy is for partial onset with rapid spread...Not generalized.

Accepted Answer

Maybe: Ssi is geared for persons with severe disabilties.  Epilepsy can often be well controlled, and in that case would not qualify.  Let's hope you don't qualify!

is lser ablation being tested on people with generalized epilepsy?

Accepted Answer

Tested?: I'm not sure of your question really?  Laser ablation which also goes by the name of the Visualase system here in the U.S. has been FDA approved to be used in treating generalized epilepsy for at least the past 4-5 years that I'm aware.  Way beyond testing. It is successfully used in patients with good outcomes who are not responding to their medications well.  Cheers!

In theory: Epilepsy is more complicated than we once thought.  Many people that have epilepsy surgery have the seizures return.  this is because epileptics have epileptic brains.  We remove a piece of the brain causing the seizures, but another epileptic area develops over time.  This would be true with laser ablation as well
