No, it is not: Both are central nervous system depressants. They can both suppress the breathing centers in your brain. You could get super drunk, uncoordinated, black out, pass out, or stop breathing with the combo. Increased risk of falls, accidents, drunkenness, and embarrassing or shameful social behaviors you may or may not recall.

Alcohol Poisoning: If you suspect alcohol poisoning usually occurs when male drinks more than 5 drinks in 2 hours and female drinks more than 4 drinks in 2 hours, depends on type of drinks and other variables. Symptoms are confusion, vomiting, stupor, unconscious etc. If you suspect it call 911 immediately.

Gabapentin + EtOH: There is an additive effect with the combination of ethanol (grain alcohol) & Gabapentin such that there is increased risk of CNS depression & psychomotor impairment. Alcohol withdrawl or excessive use can lower seizure threshold. Therefore, best not to combine the two.

Not with depression: You should not be drinking alcohol if you have depression and especially not if you have blackouts. Gabapentin and alcohol are both central nervous system depressants. Together they are more likely to make you less coordinated and to diminish your response time. Never ever drink and drive. Be careful driving on gabapentin. Leave extra space between you and the car in front of you. Seriously consider an evaluation for alcohol abuse. There are many more treatments available now today than there have ever been in the past.

Not recommended: Psychoactive medications can cause significant central nervous system dysregulation when alcohol is consumed. Not only would you experience potential side effects such as dizziness, excess sedation and drops in blood pressure, but also impaired cognitive functioning. This includes poor judgement and disinhibition. Alcohol can also interfere with full efficacy of these medications. Hope this helps.

Interaction: Both medications are not recommended to take with alcohol on board. If you're going to be home and not driving,etc I wouldn't expect any serious problem taking them. However,. be aware that there could be minor symptoms like some lightheadedness or drowsiness.

Good Question: Most substances to be addictive must be shown to be associated with a Dopamine release in the brain's reward centers.   I'm not aware of evidence for that with Gabapentin but nonetheless it is for some a potent anti-anxiety agent, so it doesn't surprise me that addictive like patterns can emerge.   If that's the case it is time to look for other ways to safely and effectively address the anxiety.
