Not currently: Gaba is an inhibitory neurotransmitter, and as a supplement is sold as a "natural tranquilizer."  by itself it doesn't cross the blood-brain barrier.  There may be a role in gaba(b) [a form of gaba] in depression, as this receptor system interacts with the serotonergic system & other neurotropic factors. GABA: Gaba is an inhibitory neurotransmitter made in the brain, where it has anticonvulsant, sedative, and anti-anxiety effects.  Although there's insufficient reliable info about either safety or effectiveness of GABA supplements, people still use them to relieve anxiety, elevate mood, relieve premenstrual syndrome, treat adhd, promote lean muscle growth, burn fat, and stabilize bp.

See below: There is no GABA in alcohol or benzos but rather these substances stimulate the GABA a receptor in the brain.  I don't know what GABA you ate getting over the counter but out does not very into the brain in any real way.

Anxiety: Sounds like whoever he is, he is battling anxiety. SInce I cannot prescribe meds, I cannot answer that part of your question, but I can ask, would he consider psychotherapy? Meds plus psychotherapy is the most optimal combination for battling, and hopefully one day conquering anxiety. Meds alone do not solve anything.
