Uncommon: Unless you have some medical condition that has lowered your immune resistance, fungal infections of the hand other than under the fingernail is uncommon.  While they can occur, skin lesions between the fingers is more likely to be exzema or psoriasis, or allergic reaction.  Can be hard to tell the difference.  You can try a topical antifungal cream. If no help get it checked out.

Usually bacteria: In decades as a pediatrician I never had one of these turn out to be a fungus.They are usually simple skin or mouth germs. Treating them repeatedly with hydrogen peroxide will usually help it heal. If not the doc may need to prescribe something.

See a dermatologist.: Persistent nail fungus on the fingers will probably not resolve on its own.  Topical antifungals may be helpful, but you may need oral medications which require a prescription and blood work.  Laser therapy is another treatment option but not all doctors offer this.

Possible but rare: Fungal infections can be acquired from animals or the environment like Ringworm !
others are from your own skin flora. Like candida intertrigo or yeast infections.
Fungal organisms require a wet or humid environment normally.
They are rarely transferred from one site to another.

Eczema: It is called dishydrotic eczema and happens from frequent wetting of the skin, especially in a pool, it can get really itchy. You need to apply a daily moisturizer and you may need to have it treated with creams if it continues.

Try new medicine: There is a new prescription medicine available that is supposed to be effective for nail fungus. However it has to be applied to the nail for at least two months or longer. Please see your doctor for a prescription.
