Not really: It should not cause numbness or tightness. It occurs due to overexposure to ultraviolet radiation. Initially there is increased redness, then later pain, itching, scaling, blisters can develop. At times its equivalent to first or second degree burns; or could even be  life-threatening. Please remember to use your sunscreen when ever you are exposing yourself to uv rays.

: I assume it's not a sore throat or tenderness of thyroid gland,muscles or enlarged lymph nodes. My sense is there's tension or tightness of throat.musculature.  Chronic tension&amp; stress can be the cause.  If this pertains to you,, stress management therapy would be helpful. Discuss with your MD or the neurologist.

Probable arthritis: Sounds like probable arthritis in your neck to me. However, it can be improved in many cases. I would advise an appointment with a physiatrist who is a medical doctor trained to deal with your problem.

Muscle spasm: See fp for muscle relaxer (preferable one that doesn't make you sleep all the time). Moist heat to neck & shoulders will help relax muscles. Stretching exercises for neck & shoulders [see ilustration]. Shoulder shrugs will help relax trapezius. Therapeutic massage also beneficial & feels wonderful.

Neck health: For muscular neck symptoms, start out with heat and anti-inflammatories (if tolerated).  Light massage is also helpful.  After symptoms settle down, engage regular stretching and strengthening to prevent recurrence and to support spinal muscular strength and health.  Since it happens after waking up, make sure you are not using too many pillows.  If this does not help, see a medical evaluaiton.

Tension Headache: Eye pain and neck pain are not that uncommon they trigger each other sometimes.  There are rare congenital conditions that directly link neck and eye muscles called torticollis.  Have your eyes checked anyway.
