Variable symptoms: The fragile x is usually passed through apparently asymptomatic carrier mothers who have a normally functioning x to cancel out the information of the altered x. Detailed evaluation of some of these females has shown subtle deficiencies in some learning parameters, giving us an understanding that girls may show partial expression of the abnormality, but never to the degree of the male.

Not getting enough a: Middle child syndrome is a child who does not getting enough attention and love because the parents are busy and providing more attention and care to the oldest and the youngest children. My recommendation to the parents is not to have children closer than four years apart. This provides enough age difference between the children to get the best care.

Yes: You get one normal x chromosome from your unaffected dad & one ?X  from your carrier mom. Your mom has a 50% risk of passing the carrier state to you. You can have your chromosomes studied to see if you are a carrier.Consultation with a geneticist may be a option if you have other questions. Your pcp may be able to order a fragile x study for you but it is usually sent out to a specialty lab.

Unlikely to happen: The defect that defines your carrier state and could pass to your son is a separate risk from that of ds, not affected by the fragile x. At 35-36 you have a separate risk of about 1% of trisomy 21, while your risk of passing the abnormal x to a son would be 50%. This is the same for a ds daughter with a similar (50%) risk of passing the carrier state to her.

Unrelated: Fragile x and Down syndrome are unrelated conditions.  Down syndrome is due to an extra copy of chromosome 21, most typically trisomy 21.  Most cases of fragile x are due to a mutation of the fmr1 gene which is located on the x chromosome.

Gene mutation: Fragile x syndrome is due to a mutation within the fmr1 gene on x chromosome.  Part of the gene gets repeated too many times. No: Not known to be preventable. Diagnosis is made by genetic testing. No medication to specifically treat fragile x. Treatment is aimed at the effects from autism, tremors, etc.
