Many months: The crack in the bone itself heals in 6 weeks, but the swelling, stiffness and pain can last for many months. That's because it involves a delicate joint and because we can't help but use our fingers throughout the day and that keeps it aggravated. If your symptoms are still beyond what you'd expect, consider getting checked for a torn tendon.

Base of finger?: Hard to say with out seeing the xray but that description should mean where your finger connects to your hand.

Varies: It varies based in part on the stability of the fracture.  Some fractures can be reduced and held well in a cast or splint or even just buddy taped to the other finger.  Others are unstable and are not held in place with a splint and so often require a pun to hold reduction.  I would discuss directly with your orthopedic surgeon.

Xray: Xray could pick up a fracture but not always. Could be hard to differentiate. Either way should get better with immobilization, ice.

Probably not: If they are just hairline fractures your primary care doctor can take care of that.  Usually an orthopedist is only necessary if there is a displaced fracture where there is a complete break and poor alignment or if surgery is required to stabilize the fracture.  Hairline fractures of the finger usually will heal fine with splinting.
