Retained tampon??: Sometimes women forget to remove a tampon (it happens surprisingly frequently) and this can cause a brown discharge. Check that out or go for an exam to see what is causing the discharge.

Brown = blood: Brown discharge is old blood. If it is happening around the time of your period then there is nothing to worry about. It is just the same blood coming out. If it is happening irregularly then you can see your doctor to discuss options or cycle regulation

Yes, normal: Spotting prior to full flow implies your progesterone levels are dropping (which is normal) and your lining is preparing to let go. Your menstrual cycle pattern can change over the course of your reproductive years. As long as you have full flow bleeding at some point each month then it's normal. If you want your menses to be more consistent then you could always take birth control pills (BCPs).

Common: Irregular periods are one of the most common problems obgyns treat. If this is one time problem it usually resolves on its own. If this is a recurring problem you should be evaluated. Infections &amp;  hormonal changes can cause spotting. If there is a concern for pregnancy then do  a home pregnancy test .  There are many options available to help regulate the menstrual cycle. Schedule a visit.

See your Doc...: It sounds like you period was abnormally short for you and now you are having pregnancy-like symtoms and back pain.  You probably want to see your doc and find out what is going on.  Pregnancy is a possibility and so is something abnormal like an ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage.  Its also possible you are not pregnant.  But it may take a blood test and visit to figure it out.
