Confusing question: I have never had an infant show me convincing evidence of  umbilical cord pain.(and they can not tell me) in fact, there are no nerve endings in an umbilical cord so it cannot send pain messages. Perhaps you are thinking about another body part.

Not much to worry: Cords like people come in different shapes and sizes.  I am not sure of the context of your question-but if the infant is born normally with a non-coiled cord-i am not concerned at all.

You don't have to: There's nothing you have to do to your baby's umbilical cord except keep it dry.  People used to clean it with alcohol or betadine but it's best just left alone.  Until it falls off you should not bathe your baby; you can give him a sponge bath but keep the umbilical stump dry. It'll fall off on its own at around 2 weeks. Then you can give him a bath.

Nothing I know about: I would be concerned if the cord was too thin-then this may be associated with decreased blood flow/nutrition during the pregnancy. If the infant is normal and has no swelling (edema), then i would not be worried about a thick umbilical cord.

Observation best: Although an umbilical cord hernia may look odd, the chances of it closing are quite high. Some people put coin, cotton, gauze on the hernia with tape.  This does not help and occlusion of the site is not recommended. The physician will follow the hernia size with you, but over time-even as long as 2 yrs-it will close. Unless unmanageable-surgery is not recommended.

Not much of a cord: During the first month there is a lot going on in development but there is not much of a cord as you may visualize it. A lot of the embryonic work goes on in a mass of tissue attached to a thick stalk. At about 30 days a crude cord is forming. The fetal cord has the ability to grow longer under tension. I've seen one 9 feet long compared to the nl 3. The only one i know snapped happened  @ birth.

Fetal movement: The coils in the umbilical cord reflect fetal movment.  Bernischke documented about 6-7 coils per 10 cm of cord.  Excessive coiling may be associated with greater than normal fetal movement.  Fetal movement   causes of excessive fetal movement vary from exposure to excessive noise or other stimuli (including some drug exposures).  On the contrary a cord with few twists represents an immobile fetus.

Not where I look: If you end up under suspicion of drug use &amp; I am asked to evaluate a newborn for such issues, I can usually find it. They do not test babies at birth under routine circumstances. However, if I need to explore the issue I can detect evidence of exposures as far back as the 2nd trimester. Either don't use or be up front with the docs so baby can be properly monitored for withdrawal.
