Many possibilities! : Gout, infection, water retention, sprain, arthritis, just to name a few.  A lot depends on the history and physical exam, so I would recommend seeing your doctor to determine the cause!

my right foot is swollen for no reason?  no trauma.  could it be infected?

Accepted Answer

Just one side?: Unilateral swelling without trauma could suggest venous insufficiency or thrombophlebitis. A venous doppler or ultrasound can help make the diagnosis. If there is redness and warmth especially around the great toe joint this could an acute gouty attack. Infection is less likely especially w/o a skin ulceration or open wound. See a doctor.

It could be: Sesamoiditis, this is a small bone under the first metatarsal head, it could be capsulitis, it could be a stress fracture, it could be a sprained joint. Gout is another possibility. 
Ice would help all of the above except, i don't recommend ice for gout. Try an antiinflammatory as well. If still problematic visit the doc who will be able to x-ray your foot and better evaluate you.

Could be a clot: The symptoms you are giving are often seen with a blood clot . Please get evaluated by a doc sooner thazn later to determine the cause and rule out a blood clot that can be life threatening.

Please see doctor: Having swelling of only one leg is worrisome for possible deep vein thrombosis (DVT-blood clot) in your leg. There are other causes of unilateral leg swelling, but the possibility of a  DVT is something you MUST eliminate as the cause first. If you are largely sedentary, have been on a long trip, are a smoker, or have any other reasons for impaired blood flow in your veins, you are at high risk.

Could be, maybe.: Typically, if a fracture is suspected, there is a history of some activity that would make the fracture suspect. Swelling is found in fractures along with pain and often bruising, but not always. There are quite a few causes for swelling of the foot, most depending on location. All will have a typical clinical pattern. Best to have the foot examined to isolate the true cause of the problem.

To help confirm: is it worse in the morning after you awaken and start walking?
