what would make my left foot and ankle swell after hernia surgery?  had it done on 12-18-15  and i noticed that my foot started swelling on 12-21-15

Not due to surgery: Swelling of foot and ankle is not a complication of Hernia Surgery.I suggest you have your Doctor check it.
It may be due to edema caused by the Iv Fluids if given during the surgery.If it is painful then it may be some kind of trauma.But the surgery will not cause the swelling

: Sounds like you need to see a local health care provider about a possible sprain, strain, or fracture or other disease. Keep a diary about your pain and share with your team.

Dependent Edema: Edema means swelling and at the end of the day, the legs/feet are prone to this due to gravity.  Edema could be related to water retention which can sometimes be alleviated by water pills - this would need to be examined, but one sided edema may be more related to lymphedema which is an inefficiency in flow of the lymphatic system.  Still should be checked but special compression pumps can be used.

Not usually: If you have done conservative care - eg limited wt bearing, splint, rest, etc then it shoud be well on its way to being healed.  Swelling might be related to new trauma, eg reinjuring it, etc.

my mom is on xeralto for a dvt. she was prescription three weeks ago but her leg, ankle and foot still swell up. is that normal? is this a new clot?

Not unusual: Anti-clotting drugs are very important in treatment of patients with DVT to prevent another clot and to reduce risk of clot going to the lungs.  However, this treatment really doesn't do anything for the clot that has already formed, which may take a long time to resolve.  It calls for a doctor's attention if it is getting substantially worse, but stable swelling at this point is common.

While you are waiting to see a doctor, you might start documenting just how often the swelling occurs as well as how long it lasts. Providing information like that will undoubtedly help a specialist isolate the problem and more importantly the cause. Take some pictures too.

Fluid retention: multiple causes: high salt intake, weight gain, circulatory or cardiovascular issues, not elevating legs when resting. Get checked for heart issues and salt intake. You may need a mild diuretic or modificiation of your diet.

Swelling: Heat can act as a vasodilator which can open blood vessels more and gravity carries it down. Do you have any health problems? Hypertension, CHF etc or are you without any systemic problems. This info would be helpful to give a better answer.

PITTING EDEMA: You need to get checked by your famiy physician.Pitting edema in the legs can come from 
1kidney disease
2liver disease
3heart failure
4chronic venous insufficiency
there are other rare causes as well.You need a thorough hstory and physical exam and blood and urine test and if indicated other tests and imaging to find out the cause and treat appropriately.

Not sure: There are lots of reasons why people retain fluid including heart and/or kidney problems. You need some basic tests to find the reason you are retaining fluid.
